Peter provides guidance to users and NEODAAS colleagues on sea-surface temperature and ocean front products and in-house software, particularly those relating to the NOAA AVHRR sensor and merged multi-sensor datasets.

Biography

A principal Earth observation scientist with over 20 years’ experience and 80 published papers, he leads research on ocean fronts, their impact upon animal behaviour and potential modulation by climate change, and on water quality including detecting harmful algal blooms. He has innovated a suite of remote sensing algorithms for detecting and visualising oceanic fronts, and linked the resulting front metrics to the foraging ecology of marine animals, including seabirds, cetaceans, fish and sharks. He devised a new paradigm in designation of marine protected areas (MPAs) using decadal satellite-detected fronts as a proxy for the abundance of mobile marine animals. His publications have an H-index of 28 (WoS).
